Here at Garage Force, concrete coating is our life and passion. This is what we do every single day and we absolutely love it. Today, we want to tackle some of the frequently asked questions we receive about concrete coating, concrete sealing and other topics related to protecting your concrete surfaces to enhance your understanding of what they are, how they work and why they’re beneficial. What is Concrete Coating?
Most basically, a concrete coating is a substance you apply to your concrete surfaces and it adheres to them, providing additional protection and benefits concrete doesn’t possess on its own. There are many different kinds of concrete coatings available, everything from traditional epoxy flooring to more advanced coating systems like our revolutionary polyurea coating systems. Another term you’ll often hear is concrete sealer, which is essentially the same in most regards as far as function, but what they provide and how they work all work differently depending on the type.
What Surfaces Should I Seal?
Really any concrete surface you want to protect or that stands a good chance of sustaining damage should be protected with a concrete sealer. This often includes outdoor patios, garage floors and finished basements. It can even be areas in your house such as kitchens or hallways should they feature concrete flooring.
What Happens If I Don’t Seal?
Despite its appearance, concrete is actually a porous material that easily absorbs liquids, chemicals and moisture. These things seep into the concrete itself and cause significant damage over time. A concrete sealer adheres to the surface and doesn’t allow these factors to penetrate the concrete. Unprotected concrete can develop cracks, spalling, flaking and more concrete problems.
How Will the Concrete Coating Look?
This completely depends on the concrete coating you choose. One of the great things about our coating systems is the fact we offer so many types. This allows you to choose a look that best suits your taste, but without sacrificing any performance as all our polyurea coatings provide exceptional protection from abrasion, impact, liquids, chemicals, thermal changes and more.
Can I Apply Concrete Coating Myself?
While technically you could apply a concrete coating to your flooring, we highly recommend that you don’t. Installing concrete coating systems is highly skilled work and requires knowledge and experience. Without it, the coating likely will not function properly and becomes costly to redo. Let our team of experts handle the installation, which can be done in as little as a day!
Will Concrete Coating Make it Slippery?
Some concrete coatings and sealers will make the surface slippery, especially when wet. This is true of traditional epoxy flooring, for example. However, our revolutionary polyurea concrete coatings feature anti-slip properties, including our quartz system, which is great in the commercial sector for restaurants, warehouses, etc. as it is extremely slip-resistant.
